Somatic-informed trauma therapy at Soulstice Miami

"I can't explain why, but my body just doesn't feel safe."

Mind-Body Connection

Your Body Holds Stories Your Mind Doesn’t Always Have Words For

At Soulstice Miami, somatic work isn’t a separate technique we use on occasion. It’s woven into how we practice, because trauma, anxiety, and relational patterns don’t only live in our thoughts. They live in our bodies as well.

The nervous system is the record-keeper of everything we’ve been through. When something overwhelms or threatens us, especially in childhood, the body holds onto it. The chest tightens before a hard conversation. The breath gets shallow in a certain person’s presence. These aren’t random reactions. They’re the body’s memory of what was once needed to survive.

Traditional talk therapy works primarily through cognition, understanding your patterns, reframing thoughts, building insight. Somatic work adds a crucial layer by working directly with the body’s sensations, movements, and nervous system responses. This is important because many of our most entrenched patterns are stored below the level of conscious thought. You can understand your pattern perfectly and still be unable to change it, because the body hasn’t gotten the message yet.

Somatic work gives that memory somewhere to go.

In session, this looks like slowing down enough to notice what’s actually happening in the body. When a client describes a difficult moment, we might pause and ask where they feel it, or where they notice the absence of feeling, as they’re talking about it. We track the sensations that arise: tightness, heat, collapse, holding. We let them guide the direction of the work. Sometimes we allow certain sensations and emotions to move through the body in a contained, supported way. Other times we use guided imagery and sensory-based techniques to build new experiences at the body level. This is often information a client has spent years overriding. Meeting it with curiosity rather than judgment changes what the body does with it.

It also looks like working with the nervous system directly. Some sessions involve guided orienting, where we slow down the eyes and let the brain register present-moment safety through its own threat-detection system. Others involve breath work, grounding, or somatic resourcing techniques that help the body settle into a sense of calm and support. Some sessions focus on building the client’s capacity to stay within their window of tolerance, the zone where they can feel without becoming flooded or shut down.

When we use EMDR, somatic work is built into the process. EMDR itself is a body-based modality. The bilateral stimulation engages the nervous system alongside cognition. Throughout processing, we track what’s happening in the body alongside the memory. Clients don’t just think their way to the other side of a trauma. Their body gets there too.

Over time, this kind of work builds something that cognitive insight alone often can’t reach: a felt sense of safety that lives in the body.

What It Helps

When Body-Based Approaches Are Especially Helpful

Trauma that lives in the body as chronic tension, pain, or hypervigilance

Anxiety that shows up physically: racing heart, tight chest, stomach knots

Dissociation or feeling disconnected from your body and emotions

Emotional reactions that feel overwhelming or hard to regulate

Stress that doesn't respond to cognitive strategies alone

A general sense of not feeling safe or at home in your own body

Your body is not the enemy of healing. It's the doorway to it.
